Bob Ellis has studied nature in Wendell for more than twenty-five years, drawing, painting, photographing - and sometimes eating - wild foods, plant and animal.
His art is richly informed by lifelong rapport with wild critters. "If we don't take active care of our planet and its riches, we shall die - inside first, then physically," he says.
The body of Bob's work numbers more than two hundred pieces, mostly watercolor paintings, some in international collections. Early on he saw that the aqueous medium held enough challenge and mystery to last a lifetime. "The whole process connects directly to nature. Paper and brushes are organic, and many of my pigments come from the earth itself, which pleases me."
His subjects are revealed directly, never posed - caught living their own lives. One senses no seperation of the experience from its interpretation. He studies deeply and habitually meditates on nature. The first visit to his home by bear, in 2001, satisfied a long yearning to greet this impressive wild presence - but it also reflects the heavy weight of the human monoculture on the land. "The earth in its beauty is much more than scenery. It is me and I am it; it is us."
These superb prints of Bob's paintings, countersigned by the artist, are rendered on 100% rag watercolor paper, with extremely faithful color rendition and graphic detail. Upon order, the image is printed at life size, approximately 15 x 22 inches; all prints are delivered unframed.
