Elizabeth Farnsworth of Royalston, Massachusetts has been creating original scientific illustrations for over 20 years. She is currently the scientific illustrator for the New England Wild Flower Society and her work has appeared in many nature books and scientific journals including the American Journal of Botany, Annals of Botany, and Conservation Biology.
Elizabeth became inspired to create her artwork in her training and profession as a scientist. She found that art revealed itself in patterns in nature and her drawings assisted her research. One science/drawing project quickly led to others and the need to show scientific concepts through art became apparent.
Although Ms. Farnsworth is largely a self-taught illustrator and has been drawing all of her life, she credits her high school art teacher, Gene Scattergood, for “planting the seeds” of her artistic skills.
Elizabeth’s favorite part of illustration is the close observance of nature’s fine details, its wondrous features, and adaptations of living organisms. She also enjoys teaching others to observe and draw the natural world.
Elizabeth is originally from Boston and has lived in the beautiful North Quabbin region for seven years. She especially appreciates the close-knit community of creative people as well as the waterfalls, landscapes, and views. In her spare time, Elizabeth gardens and wanders the many trails located in the area.
