Taft Woodworking

David Taft has a long history with wood turning.  David began turning bowls while attending junior high school in Hamden, MA where he tinkered with a lathe laying idle in the back of the classroom. Today, he makes beautiful pieces of art with a rich, sculptural quality, including bowls, plates, and platters -- all made from local tree burls.

David finds his work to be very therapeutic.  The scents and sounds of wood turning has a calming effect, especially when working with the sweet scent of cherry.  He has also turned canfer, which was used in old sinus remedies and found it helped clear his head and made the house smell great.

When approaching his work, David's designs evolve during the wood turning process.  David begins with a burl from a tree.  The wood is turned while "green" and dried from 1-3 months.  It is then finished with a urethane oil (2-3 coats), a diamond powder buffing system, and coated with canuba wax which is food safe.

Originally from south central, Massachusetts, David now lives in Monson. He enjoys fly fishing, walking on trails, and photographing the scenic Quabbin region.

David's wood turnings can be commissioned upon request.
