Tracker Organs

The eminent German organ builder Stefan Maier moved to the United States from France in 1993 and settled in New England. Stefan builds and maintains mechanical action organs for clients throughout the state, from Pittsfield to Boston. In addition to his maintenance duties for some of the finest organs in the state, Stefan builds small instruments and restores historic organs at his shop in Orange, Massachusetts.

Stefan Maier began his organ building career working in the shop of Hans Karl in Bavaria, Germany in 1982. In 1983 he began working with a Swiss organ builder, Eddy Ottes, where he had the opportunity to work on the restoration of numerous historical instruments. Based on that experience, Stefan decided to dedicate his life to the art of organ building. He then began a formal apprenticeship with the firm Stehle-Orgelbau in Germany, while concurrently studying at the School for Organbuilders. He completed his training in 1987 and became a Journeyman.

One of Stefan’s finest works is the organ pictured at right. It was custom designed and built to fit in the main dining room of a sailing vessel, the Antonisa. The challenge of building such an organ was clear. The instrument had to be built in a very limited space. It had to be able to cope with salt air, high humidity, and the rocking and rolling motions of a sailboat at sea. The result of Stefan’s skilled design work was the beautiful organ you see pictured here!
