Jaye Pope, the artisan behind Good Dirt Pottery, is a true local. Originally from East Templeton, Jaye has lived and worked as a successful artist in the region since 1979. She fell in love with clay in high school, and further developed her craft through summer classes in New Hampshire, fine arts training at local colleges and universities, and an apprenticeship at Bald Mountain Pottery in Shelburne Falls. She mostly learned by doing, reading and taking a few workshops with really good teachers.
In March 2001, Good Dirt Pottery officially opened its doors and Jaye began creating functional wheel thrown/handmade stoneware and porcelain. She enjoys creating work that enhances the quality of other people’s lives. Jaye loves working with the elements of earth, water, and fire. "I feel there is magic to be unleashed when I collaborate with these three", she said, speaking of how pottery brings these elements together in a creative way.
Jaye loves New England. She feels connected to the North Quabbin Region because ‘Working with clay is a different version of working the land. You work with it, It works with you. You shape it, It shapes you.’
Her work has been shown at the Danforth Museum in Framingham and the Arsenal Museum in Watertown.
