Edward was raised in and around Concord, Massachusetts. Art runs throughout the Hastings family. Two of Edward's sisters are also artists and all three are self-taught. As a child, Edward dabbled in pastels and oil, but found watercolor to be the most rewarding. Today, not only does Eddie create beautiful watercolor landscapes, but also Mountain Laurel sculptures – Lamps and Tables.

For over forty years, Edward has vacationed in Pemaquid, Maine. Always inspired by the beauty there, it has been subject of many of Edward's paintings; from the rocks upon which Pemaquid Light is perched to the spectacular sunsets on John's Bay. The beauty of the North Quabbin Region has also been an inspiration for his landscapes.

Mountain Laurel bushes for Edward’s sculptures have been collected from the North Quabbin Region. He enjoys seeing something emerge from nothing in his creations.

Edward and his wife resided in Wendell. Along with New Salem, it is an area of natural beauty that provides inspiration for his most recent work.

Edward’s work can also be seen at Green Trees Gallery in Northfield, Bank of Western Mass in South Deerfield, Sunderland House Restaurant, Chelmsford Library, Gallery Seven in Maynard, and Dunia’s in Maynard.
