When the Creek people were marched to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears, they were told of huge animals that would be of great food for them. Being from Georgia, they had no idea what the buffalo looked like. At the end of the trail, they discovered that most of the buffalo had been slaughtered for their hides, and there was very little to eat. The Creeks were forced to eat their horses and dogs, and hunt many small animals to survive.
In this traditional Creek wood carving, the horns of the buffalo point down, signifying how once more the people were let down by the white man.
