Fish Brook Wildlife Management Area

Royalston, MA

A steep section of the Tully Trail, where the brook cuts a scenic gorge on its way to the Tully River.

Description:

This 110-acre parcel has no road frontage but is traversed by the Tully Trail, with access from Butterworth Rd. in Orange through a portion of the Orange State Forest or from Rte. 32 in Royalston, with a longer hike west and south along the Tully Trail(which shares space for a while with the Metacomet-Monadnack Trail). The WMA itself sports a scenic gorge where Fish Brook, a cold-water stream with native brook trout, cuts through on its way to the Tully River. Grouse, deer, snowshoe hare, coyote, some waterfowl, and numerous nongame species also live in this sometimes steeply hilly area.

Directions:

From Rte. 2 take Exit 18 and follow Rte. 2A west into Athol center. Turn right (north) at the traffic light onto Exchange St. Turn left onto Pequog Ave. just across the bridge and go 5.1 miles to Butterworth Rd. on right. (Note: Pequog Ave. becomes Pinedale Ave. and then Tully Rd.) Go about 1/2 mile to small parking area on left. Continue on foot to yellow-blazed Tully Trail on left.
